Role Purpose:  

Kids in Focus is a specialist child, parenting, and family support program for families where a parent has or is recovering from a drug or alcohol problem. The program provides a range of child focused activities and home-based support, tailored to the needs of individual family members, including the capacity to provide ongoing long-term support and follow-up when required.  

The Senior Kids in Focus Case Manager provides practical and emotional goal-focused home-based support (intensive outreach) to a caseload of families including children, parents, and other carers. A key purpose of the position is to improve responsiveness and increase awareness of the needs of children and their families from the alcohol and other drug sector and allied service sectors. 

 

Key areas of focus:   

  • Providing home-based child, parenting and family support to families where a parent has a drug or alcohol dependency.  

  • Developing and implementing strategies that address children’s identified needs, including the provision of age-appropriate counselling and support, and referral to specialist services as appropriate.  

  • Assisting parents identify and achieve parenting goals through assessment of parenting needs.  

  • Working collaboratively with parents to develop and implement intervention plans that strengthen their parenting capacity and effectiveness.  

  • Providing parenting skills training and develop individual relapse plans.  

  • Providing families with social and community support through establishing and strengthening family-community links. This may include improving relationships with extended family, improving links with school, supporting participation in recreational activities and playgroups, and supporting access to child and respite care, and other formal support services.  

  • Supporting parents to participate in drug treatment through direct provision of counselling, referrals, and/or linkage to and collaboration with AOD workers.  

  • Liaising professionally with agencies and workers involved with the affected families.  

  • Providing client education on drug and alcohol use during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding, and promoting the use of specialist obstetric and maternal child health services  

  • Advocating for the needs of family members  

  • Assisting, organising and co-facilitating school holiday programs for children and their parents  

  • Working collaboratively with other drug and alcohol agencies to increase the level of child parenting and family support offered to their clients. 

  • Actively promote and adhere to the OV Child Safety policy and procedures to assist OV to maintain a Child Safe Organisation and support colleagues to engage in child safe practices. 

 

To be successful in this role, you must…   

  1. Relevant health and or welfare tertiary/degree qualification e.g., in Social Work, Psychology, Nursing or Allied Health Sciences with experience  

  1. Certificate IV in AOD or have completed the required competencies (or able to complete within the first 12 months of employment). * (Refer Appendix A)  

  1. Specialist experience working with families including:  

  • Knowledge and understanding of child and family development.  

  • Recognising and responding to risk factors associated with child abuse and child protective concerns.  

  • Risk and protective factors associated with infant and child development concerns. 

  •  Utilising the MARAMIS framework to recognising and responding to family violence; working at the intersection of family violence and the impact on child wellbeing and development’  

  • Bio-psychosocial assessment with a specific focus on therapeutic and clinical pathways, goal setting and collaborative case planning  

  • Sound knowledge of alcohol and other drug use, dual diagnosis and mental health issues for parents and children  

  • Relevant legislation and policies, including MARAM Framework and the Children Youth and Families Act.  

  1. Possess sensitivity to the needs of all family members including children and parents. 

Commitment to a strengths-based approach to practice  

  1. Ability to collaboratively develop client plans and undertaking therapeutic child and family interventions in groups, families and with individuals.  

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the importance and application of intersectionality when working with people from all cultures, genders, sexualities, bodies, abilities, spiritualities, ages and backgrounds 

  1. High level communication skills, both written and oral, particularly in relation to working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, establishing rapport with children of all ages and their families, and forming and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external parties  

  1. Ability to exercise professional judgement and contribute critical knowledge where solutions may not be clearly defined. 

  1. Ability to find and implement effective and timely solutions to problems.  

  1. Ability to work in a highly motivated, self-directed, ethical and results driven manner.  

  1. Strong organisation and time management skills with the ability to work autonomously.

*Appendix A (AOD Competencies)   

OV requires people in clinical positions to have the following competencies (or their equivalent). Where people do not already have these competencies, OV will invest in the person’s professional development by providing them through its RTO.   

The competencies required in the first 12 months of employment are:   

  • CHCAOD001 - Work in an alcohol and other drugs context   

  • CHCAOD004 - Assess needs of clients with alcohol and other drugs issues.   

  • CHCAOD006 - Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues.   

  • CHCAOD009 - Develop and review individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans
